What is Noon Assembly?
The Noon Assembly is an initiative to shift school assembly timings from early morning to noon. This will help address the huge Vitamin D deficiency problem in Indian children.
Why is Noon Assembly needed?
Most of the children in India are Vitamin D deficient. It is a vitamin so essential that its deficiency can lead to lifelong bone weakness, reduced immunity, and risk of many lifestyle related diseases. In addition to having foods fortified with Vitamin D like milk and oil, it needs to be created within the body by exposure to sunlight. But, only at the right time.
But, why noon?
Children these days either don’t go out in the sun, or when they do, the quality of sunlight is not up to the mark. Medical research shows that 11am to 1pm is a better time for Vitamin D production in the skin. In fact, compared to morning hours, sunlight can produce up to 5 times more Vitamin D during this time! What the Noon Assembly does is to simply switch the morning assembly to noon. It ensures that all the students get at least 20 minutes of sunlight exposure at a time when it is best for Vitamin D production.

Here are some facts related to Vitamin D and the Noon Assembly:
Vitamin D becomes active in our body when it gets sunlight exposure. The process of conversion from its inactive to active form depends upon the amount of sunlight (UV-B radiation) reaching the earth’s surface; the angle between the sun and the earth’s zenith (scientifically called the solar zenith angle); the time of the day; season of the year; and other factors
It has been observed that with a decreasing zenith angle, the conversion of Vitamin D from its inactive to active form is higher
The zenith angle decreases during 11 am -1 pm (minimum is seen at 12 and 1 pm)
Research shows that sunlight exposure at this time can provide up to 5 times more Vitamin D formation than compared to morning hours
Leading educational bodies, corporate houses, and non-governmental organizations are partners in the ‘Noon Assembly’ initiative.
